Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then found many other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests show the liquid was likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities stated they were working "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for tips.
An important representative commented the incident rendered him without words and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
