Approximately 35,000 applicants may be compromised, warns the American embassy

A major data breach in the Somali digital visa application system may have exposed private data pertaining to many thousands of applicants, including US citizens, the United States diplomatic mission in Somalia has warned.

Officials stated obtained reliable information that "unidentified hackers" breached the Mogadishu administration's digital visa application portal, potentially compromising details concerning approximately 35,000 applicants.

The compromised files circulating online include personal identifiers, images, dates of birth, marital status, place of residence and email information, according to a American diplomatic communication published on last Thursday.

"This security incident is ongoing and potentially disclose all private information provided to this platform," United Kingdom officials has additionally cautioned travelers.

"Evaluate the dangers when considering application for an electronic visa necessary for entry into the Somali nation."

Official Reaction

Somali authorities have not issued statements about the security compromise. But authorities has transferred its visa service from the previous platform the initial application portal to the new system etas.gov.so, without offering an official explanation.

"While American diplomatic mission in Somalia lacks the capacity to validate whether applicant details is part of the breach, travelers who have requested visas for a Somali e-visa may be affected," the official communication declared.

Territorial Consequences

The updated visa process necessitates every visitor, including those from the independently governed area of the breakaway region and the partially independent area of the northeastern region, to apply for admission permits online.

Commentators state visitors have encountered additional charges in certain regions, amounting to duplicate payments.

Geopolitical Background

Somaliland, which declared independence in three decades ago, administers its affairs with its own institutions but has not been global recognition. Mogadishu authorities maintains that the region remains part of its national domain.

The claimed security incident exacerbates ongoing disputes concerning Mogadishu and Hargeisa concerning jurisdiction of Somali airspace. Although Somalia re-established full control of its airspace in the past decade, Somaliland continues to contest this agreement.

Ongoing Conflict

The dispute escalated further in recent days when Somaliland's President the Somaliland president stated Somaliland would refuse the federal e-visa system and directed that carriers need to acquire authorization from Somaliland officials before entering their territorial skies.

Nevertheless leading carriers have refused to board passengers absent federal visa authorization.

On Saturday, Hargeisa's international relations official the diplomatic representative again insisted that "all visitors to Somaliland should receive travel authorization at the point of entry", stating Mogadishu's digital application process lacked security and cautioning that "people's data might be obtained by extremist organizations" due to using it.

Aviation Challenges

The impasse has resulted in numerous passengers traveling to Hargeisa stuck in transit hubs after being denied boarding for lacking Somalia's e-visa.

The northern region's aviation official, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, has told news organizations that the directives - first announced previously - were implemented on the tenth of November.

Officials declared carriers that refuse would be instructed to change course, and asserted numerous flights were previously redirected.

Jurisdictional Battle

Video evidence released by Somaliland's aviation ministry appears to show territorial flight directors giving directions to foreign aircraft commanders - an action hailed internally as a confirmation of the region's independence.

Nevertheless the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority maintains it possesses exclusive regulatory authority regarding the federal aviation control area (FIR), which covers all territorial skies. Authorities have instructed every plane to pay no attention to any guidance coming from sources besides federal authorities.

It warned that failing to comply with Somali and international aviation rules could pose aviation dangers and cause "major judicial outcomes".
